A golfer’s haven, the attractive little village of Gullane – in the coronary heart of East Lothian – is a place that lives and breathes golf. Recent host of the Scottish Open – performed on a composite layout of the fabled No1. Course and a couple of cracking holes from No2. – golf on the leading of Gullane hill is really special. The No2. course is great worth and every inch as difficult as its big brother

. five hundred Craigelaw

In a quarter packed full of century-old links, the teenaged Craigielaw is a one of the few new classes in East Lothian. But given that is was designed by the master architects and ‘Open Doctor’ Donald Steel, it’s no surprise that it’s already hosting major championships

Laid out on rolling hyperlinks and above Kilspindie, Craigielaw is a tough test with plenty of tough and pot bunkers to negotiate with. The on-site Lodge is a perfect base for any East Lothian golf break

. five hundred Leven Links

Sharing a stretch of land overlooking the wonderful Largo Bay on Fife’s scenic southern coastline, the two Leven and Lundin hyperlinks are wonderful throwbacks, offering hyperlinks lovers charming and testing golf

Having gone their separate methods a century ago, the clubs remain intrinsically linked and are separated by nothing extra than a stone wall. Leven’s 18th, with the formidable Scoonie Burn protecting the green is a traditional cardwrecker

. five hundred sixth hole Nairn GC

Ranked as excessive as No30. in National Club Golfer’s Top a hundred hyperlinks courses, Nairn is hardly a hidden gem. But whereas the likes of Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart garner much of the Highland golf attention, this former Walker Cup venue goes quietly about the job of being brilliant. With some of the finest greens in Christendom and a wonderful opening stretch hugging the Moray Firth, this is Scottish hyperlinks golf at its finest

. five hundred Brora GC

Not long, but far away, the stupendously old-school Brora Golf Club is a pleasure for these who like their golf tough and prepared. A James Braid traditional further north even than Dornoch, enjoying Brora is like travelling back in time to the day where cattle roamed the hyperlinks (they nonetheless do) and holes have been basically hewn from the contours of the land. Short by modern requirements it may well be but what enjoyable it is to play. An absolute classic

. five hundred Western Gailes

One for the hyperlinks golf purists, the fabulous Western Gailes is one other that have been it not for the caliber of its neighbours – in this case Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry – would be much extra highly regarded. But for these in the know, this Ayrshire gem is every inch as difficult as these esteemed Open venues

Some may well say it’s really tougher… a truth backed up by a Par of 71 and a Standard Scratch of 74 (prior to the new handicapping system). Keep your ball away from the menace of sand dunes, burns, pot bunkers, OB, the railway line, and you may well simply be ok!

Laying claim to be the 7th oldest course in the world, Crail is a really outstanding place to play golf. Just eleven miles from St Andrews, this historic hyperlinks – laid out by Old Tom Morris – may well measure much less than 6,000 yards but it certainly punches above its weight and is one of the game’s tougher Par 69’s, with no much less than six one-shotters. The back-to-back Par 3’s at thirteen and 14 are simply two highlights at a venue that will not disappoint

With Cruden Bay, Royal Aberdeen and now Trump International in close proximity, you might forgive Murcar Links for having an inferiority advanced – thankfully this lovely, conventional hyperlinks has no such doubts about its place in Aberdeen’s mightily extraordinary portfolio of courses

Great value, a warm welcome and some really spectacular holes – not least the famed 7th, Serpentine – await visitors to the North-East

Royal Montrose

Montrose Medal, Angus, David J Whyte®

More than 450 years old, but not seeking a day over 449, Montrose is one of the very cradles of the game, with only St Andrews and Leith claiming seniority. The famed Medal course is what you may well call an absolute classic, with an abundance of old-school hyperlinks characteristics including that pretty crisp turf, some really cavernous bunkering, crumpled fairways, a few quirky holes, huge swathes of gorse, some unimaginable views, and oodles of character
